- 1. INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INFORMATION
- -------------------------------------------
-
- The Install Program places all of the ObjectVision Trial Disk files under
- one directory on your hard disk. It DOES NOT MODIFY your AUTOEXEC.BAT or
- CONFIG.SYS files. It does add sections to your WIN.INI file. A desktop
- Group and 3 icons are added.
-
- This Trial Disk has been produced for evaluation purposes. It contains a
- complete working copy of ObjectVision 2.1 which has been modified to limit
- the size of application that can be SAVED (maximum: 2 forms, 50 fields or
- 2 database links). Other than this restriction, it is a complete and full
- featured version of ObjectVision 2.1 for Windows, including full HELP
- capability (Press the F1 key while running ObjectVision).
-
- The ObjectVision 2.1 product which you may purchase also includes full
- documentation (including a tutorial), a run time version (which can be
- distributed FREE of any royalty), and additional example applications.
-
- This Trial disk also contains:
-
- A. A short, guided tutorial to acquaint you with the way applications
- are created with ObjectVision.
-
- B. A "Show-Me-More" application which includes examples that demonstrate
- some of the more powerful features of ObjectVision.
-
- C. An annotated example application, based on an auction house managing
- inventory and bids for used computer equipment.
-
- D. Eleven additional example applications, including 2 games.
-
- This trial disk has been tested with Microsoft Windows 3.0 and 3.1.
-
-
- 2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS AND INSTALLATION
- ---------------------------------------
-
- A. System Requirements:
-
- Standard PC system running Windows 3.0 or 3.1
- Mouse
- 2MB of RAM, minimum
- 3.8 MB of hard disk space, minimum
- 3.5" high density diskette drive
-
- Optional:
- EGA, VGA, 8515/A, Hercules graphics card or compatible video
- graphics adapter
- ObjectVision runs with all printers and networks supported by
- Windows 3.0 and 3.1.
-
- B. Installation:
-
- With the Trial disk in a diskette drive, from the Windows Program
- Manager, select FILE|RUN, then TYPE A:INSTALL. Or, using the File
- Manager, double click on the file INSTALL.EXE. You will be allowed
- to modify some of the install options (such as directory name) for
- the installation. HELP is available for the install options by
- pressing the F1 key.
-
- C. SHARE
-
- SHARE must be loaded in order for the ObjectVision Trial disk to be
- used. If SHARE is not loaded, the installation program will notify
- you and will not attempt to launch the ObjectVision Trial applications.
-
- To load share, you must leave Windows. To load SHARE temporarily (it
- will be unloaded if you reboot), you may simply type SHARE at the DOS
- command prompt, then load Windows, and double click the "ObjectVision
- Tour" icon. To cause SHARE to always be loaded, use an editor and
- add a new line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
- SHARE
- and then reboot your system. This is the recommended method of
- assuring SHARE is always loaded.
-
- C. Installation notes:
-
- When using the Windows 386 Enhanced Mode, the installation program
- may show that there is insufficient disk space to install
- ObjectVision due to the Windows swap file. Though you may have
- sufficient disk space when Windows is not running, Windows
- allocates some of this space for its own use. To install
- ObjectVision in this situation, you should run Windows in Standard
- Mode by typing "win /s" at the DOS prompt.
-
- If you are already running ObjectVision on your system, your WIN.INI
- will be modified for the values used by the Trial disk. The Paradox
- Engine and Btrieve sections will be reset to default values. The
- HomeDir value in the ObjectVision section will contain the path to
- the Trial directory (\VISIONT).
-
-
- 3. SPECIAL KEYSTROKES
- ---------------------
-
- During the guided tutorial, the following keys are available:
-
- * <F2>: Takes you to the next step in the
- tutorial.
-
- * <Alt-F2>: Takes you back to the previous step in the
- tutorial (you can back just one step from
- where you are currently in the
- tutorial).
-
- * <F12>: Stops the First Look tutorial. Before
- pressing <F12>, you must first close all
- ObjectVision tools and be in User
- Mode. If you're not, the program will tell
- you that you can't proceed until you are.
-
- Additionally, the ObjectVision applications used for the guided tutorial
- and features demonstrations (but not the example files) also support the
- following keystrokes:
-
- * <CTRL-M>: Restores the standard ObjectVision menus
-
- * <CTRL-R>: Resets the application internally, and resets any
- special menus
-
-
- 4. TECHNICAL SUPPORT
- --------------------
-
- A. ObjectVision HELP:
-
- To access ObjectVision HELP at any time, simply press the <F1> key.
-
- B. Borland Technical Support:
-
- This Trial Disk is backed by complete Borland Technical Support. So
- if you have questions or need advice on completing any potion of
- the Disk, call BORLAND TECHNICAL SUPPORT at (408) 461-9144, 6 AM TO
- 5 PM Pacific Time.
-
-
- 5. NETWORK INSTALLATION
- -----------------------
-
- Do not attempt to run the Install program from a network drive. To
- install ObjectVision from a network, first copy INSTALL.EXE and
- OV2.LZ to a local drive. Start INSTALL on the local drive and then
- specify the network drive as the source location for the remaining
- files.
-
-
- 6. .DLL FILES
- -------------
-
- When you install ObjectVision, the .DLL files for the Paradox
- Engine and Novell Btrieve are placed in your ObjectVision Trial
- directory. But .DLL files you get from other sources may be
- different versions that are placed in different directories.
-
- Only one .DLL gets loaded into memory. If there are multiple
- versions on your disk, the first one loaded is the one that is
- used. This can cause problems when an application needs a later
- version of the .DLL but an earlier version is already loaded. In
- a situation like this, the application will not run properly.
-
- When ObjectVision loads the .DLL, it will look first in its own
- directory, then the Windows directory, and then any directory in
- your PATH statement.
-
- Use the date stamp on the .DLL file to decide which is most recent
- version. If there is an earlier version of the DLL in the Windows
- directory, overwrite it. If there is a later version in the
- Windows directory, delete the version in ObjectVision's directory.
- If there are copies of the .DLL in other directories, place the
- most recent one in the Windows directory.
-
- If you are using Windows 3.1, you should delete the following .DLL
- files from your ObjectVision directory:
-
- OLECLI.DLL
- SHELL.DLL
-
-
- 7. NON-ASCII SORT ORDER
- -----------------------
-
- Before using existing Paradox or Btrieve tables with non-ASCII sort
- orders, open the Control Panel's International icon and choose the
- language and country settings that match the table's sort order.
- When you create Paradox or Btrieve tables with ObjectVision, your
- current language and country settings are automatically used.
-
-
- 8. PARADOX ENGINE AND BTRIEVE
- -----------------------------
-
- ObjectVision 2.1 Paradox Engine parameters default to the Paradox 4.0
- locking protocol. You can modify any of the Paradox Engine parameters by
- either making the modification in your WIN.INI or executing the
- PXENGCFG.EXE program which modifies the settings in your WIN.INI.
-
- 1) In the Network Configuration dialog box, there is a section for locking
- protocol preferences. The Paradox 4.0 locking protocol is compatible with
- Paradox 4.0 only. Paradox 4.0 uses a different, more efficient internal
- locking system which is not compatible with earlier Paradox versions. The
- Paradox 4.0 protocol imposes less overhead and is recommended for new
- applications. The other option, which is Paradox 3.5, selects a locking
- protocol compatible with Paradox 3.5 and earlier.
-
- If you use ObjectVision to create your Paradox database tables,
- ObjectVision will create either Paradox 3.5 or Paradox 4.0 compatible
- tables depending on which locking protocol you have selected in the WIN.INI
- file.
-
- If you have chosen Paradox 4.0 for your compatibility choice, then you can
- take advantage of two of Paradox 4.0's new features.
-
- -You will be able to read and write data using Paradox 4.0's memo fields.
- When you create a memo field, you must specify the number of
- initial characters that Paradox displays in table view, from 1 to 240.
- You are not specifying the memo field's maximum size with this number,
- a single memo field in ObjectVision can be up to 4K in size. ObjectVision
- will display all 4K if the field is large enough.
-
- -You can also use Paradox 4.0's multi-field secondary index files. Unlike
- Paradox 3.5 secondary indexes, these files allow you to concatenate
- multiple fields to create a secondary index for your Paradox 4.0 tables.
- You will need to have Paradox 4.0 to create multi-field secondary index
- files.
-
- 2) The Net Type lets you specify your network. If you want to modify your
- Net Type you must make the modification in your WIN.INI. The PXENGCFG
- program no longer has this option. The following are the networks
- supported and their corresponding net type number:
-
- Not on a network or Other 5
- Novell Netware 2
- 3COM 3+ 3
- 3COM 3+Open 4
- IBM PC LAN 9
- StarGROUP (AT&T) 7
- Banyan Vines 8
-
-
- To modify your Net Type in your WIN.INI, edit you WIN.INI and search for
- "NetType" and change the number to the number that corresponds to your
- network. Make sure you save the changes.
-
- ObjectVision 2.1 supports the numericsts field type introduced in
- Novell's Netware SQL Version 3.0.
